If she wants the charges dropped, should Polanski still be punished? I think so. In a criminal case, the prosecution represents the "State" or governing body, not the actual victim. The crime is considered committed against society and the laws of the land. So it is up to the governing body to decide whether or not to prosecute. I think it would not send the proper message if the governing body chose not to punish a child rapist; even if the actual child involved grows up and requests that no charges be filed. Personally, I think she just wants closure, and does not want to be the center of media attention.
